Jorge - Featuring Ellen the Felon
(FIRE DOG)
April 17, 2011
Dave Hagerty
When musician and friend, Dave Hagerty, died in a hit and run, this past summer it was a devastating loss the St. Louis music community. Weeks after the accident a raffle was held to help pay for medical bills. Firebrand Recording donated a day of studio time and my name was drawn. I won the prize.
I knew that i wanted to make something special in Dave's memory. We were lucky to work with some of the people who were closest to Dave in recording his song “Jorge,” which he wrote for a friend who lost his life to a heroine addiction. Thank you thank you thank you to everyone involved in the unique collaboration especially Ellen the Felon, Fattback, Brian Scheffer, CJ Muggs, and everyone everyone everyone else too.
So this’ll be the year I get clean. I swear to god I’ll use my degree to find a job,
find a she, buy a Gibson Flying V
There’s scars on my belly like you’ve never seen unless you’re a student at UT,
Open your books to page 243, hey look there’s me
If you could change me, what would you do?
If you’re here to save my life then why didn’t you? … when I coulda used it.
So I walk past the weeds and I turn down the booze, but I couldn’t refuse those little balloons, so I turn off the news turn up the cartoons and heat up my spoons.
I walk 4 miles to pick up my check, but I haven’t felt any benefit yet, so how much more up hill does life get, and why are you smiling?
If you’re here to change me, what would you do?
If you’re here to save my life then why didn’t you? … when I coulda used it.
